About studying in Australia

Australia offers well-ranked universities, a structured Student visa (subclass 500) and post-study work rights through the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485). It has also become stricter. The government now limits new international student numbers each year, the visa fee went up to AUD 2,500 in July 2026, and from 2 October 2026 most students can no longer include a spouse or children in their Student visa.

If you want to study in Australia from Pakistan, you will need a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE), solid financial evidence, a recognised English test and convincing answers to the Genuine Student questions. This guide covers 2026 costs, entry requirements for FSc/A-level and Pakistani degree holders, the visa process, work limits and options after graduation.

Meezab Future Consulting helps Pakistani students who want to study in Australia: choosing the right course, applying to universities and preparing the student visa file.

Cost of studying in Australia

Tuition depends on the university, city and field. Most bachelor's degrees cost roughly AUD 30,000–50,000 a year and most master's degrees AUD 32,000–60,000 (approx.). Medicine, engineering and programs at top universities are at the higher end, and regional campuses are often cheaper. Real living costs in Sydney and Melbourne can be AUD 30,000–45,000 a year or more, mainly because of rent.

For the visa, Home Affairs sets minimum financial capacity. You must cover travel (about AUD 2,000 from Pakistan), 12 months of course fees and 12 months of living costs: AUD 29,710 for the student, plus AUD 10,394 for a partner and AUD 4,449 per child where family are eligible to come. Instead of savings, you can show that your parents' or partner's personal annual income was at least AUD 87,856 in the past 12 months, using official tax documents. Pakistani applicants should use the Document Checklist tool to see what evidence they must attach. Show genuine, accessible funds (savings, fixed deposits, an education loan or a scholarship) with a clear source. Sudden large deposits without explanation can lead to refusal.

Entry requirements for Pakistani students

  • Undergraduate: HSSC/FSc or A-levels with good results. Some universities accept FSc directly for certain programs, while others require a foundation year or diploma pathway first.
  • Master's: a 16-year bachelor's degree is usually preferred. Many universities accept 14-year degrees only for some programs, sometimes for a longer (extended) master's or after a graduate certificate or diploma.
  • English for admission: universities typically ask for IELTS Academic 6.0–6.5 overall (no band below 6.0 for many postgraduate programs). PTE Academic and TOEFL iBT are also widely accepted.
  • English for the visa (tests taken from 7 August 2025): at least IELTS 6.0, PTE Academic 47 or TOEFL iBT 67, with lower scores allowed if packaged with ELICOS. Fully at-home tests are not accepted.
  • Documents: CoE, passport, Matric/FSc and degree transcripts (IBCC/HEC attestation if requested), financial evidence, Genuine Student answers, OSHC, and work or gap evidence if relevant.
  • Health examination and character requirements. Pakistani applicants are typically asked for a medical including a chest X-ray at an approved panel clinic.

Australia student visa from Pakistan

You apply for the Student visa (subclass 500) online through ImmiAccount from Pakistan after you accept your offer and receive a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE). Key documents are the CoE, your passport, academic records, English test results, financial evidence, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for your whole stay, and answers to the Genuine Student questions (up to 150 words each) explaining your study plans, ties and why you chose the course. The base fee is AUD 2,500 from 1 July 2026; use the Visa Pricing Estimator to confirm the exact amount. Under the rules from 2 October 2026, you generally cannot include a partner or children unless you are a PhD student or meet another exemption (such as DFAT/Defence sponsorship or a foreign government scholarship), and you cannot add family members after your visa is granted.

After you lodge the application, Home Affairs sends a biometrics request. In Pakistan, biometrics are collected at Australia Biometrics Collection Centres run by VFS Global, and the High Commission says no appointment is needed. Health checks are booked through an approved panel clinic. Offshore student visas are processed under Ministerial Direction 115, which gives priority depending on how your education provider manages its allocation under the national planning level, so processing times differ between providers. Check the official processing-time guide and apply as early as possible.

Work while studying and after graduation

Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session and unlimited hours during official course breaks. Master's by research and PhD students have no work limit. After graduation, the Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485), Post-Higher Education Work stream, usually allows 2 years for a bachelor's or coursework master's degree and 3 years for a master's by research or PhD. You must apply from inside Australia, generally be 35 or under (under 50 for research master's/PhD graduates), and show at least IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each band (or an equivalent score). Some graduates move on to employer-sponsored or skilled visas leading to permanent residence. These pathways depend on occupation lists and points, and PR is not guaranteed.

Intakes and when to apply

The two main intakes are February/March (Semester 1) and July (Semester 2). Some universities also have November or trimester starts. For a February start, apply to universities from Pakistan around June to September of the previous year. For July, apply around October to March. Leave 2–3 months after receiving your CoE for the visa, biometrics and medicals, because processing priority varies.

Study in Australia from Pakistan: FAQs

How much money do I need to study in Australia from Pakistan?

For the visa, you must show 12 months of tuition, AUD 29,710 for living costs and about AUD 2,000 for travel. Alternatively, you can show that your parents' or partner's annual income is at least AUD 87,856. On top of that, budget for the AUD 2,500 visa fee, OSHC and medicals. Actual living costs in big cities are often higher than the visa minimum.

What IELTS or PTE score do I need for Australia?

The visa minimum for tests taken from 7 August 2025 is IELTS 6.0, PTE Academic 47 or TOEFL iBT 67 (lower if your course is packaged with ELICOS). Universities usually ask for more, typically IELTS 6.5 overall for postgraduate study. For the 485 graduate visa later, you need at least IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5 in each band.

Is a study gap a problem for Australia?

A gap is not automatically a refusal reason, but it is assessed under the Genuine Student requirement. Explain it clearly with evidence such as employment letters, salary slips or courses, and show how the new course connects to your past studies and career plans.

Can I bring my spouse or children to Australia on a Student visa?

For applications lodged from 2 October 2026, most students cannot include family members. Exemptions cover PhD students, DFAT or Defence sponsored students, holders of foreign government scholarships, and Pacific and ASEAN nationals. Family members cannot be added after the visa is granted.

Can I get PR in Australia after studying?

There is no automatic PR for students. Graduates usually work on a 485 visa and then apply for skilled or employer-sponsored visas, which depend on occupation lists, skills assessments, English and points. Rules and invitation levels change often, so treat PR as possible but not guaranteed.

Are there scholarships for Pakistani students in Australia?

Australia Awards Scholarships are offered to Pakistani applicants for fully funded postgraduate study, with yearly application rounds. Universities also offer partial merit scholarships (often a percentage off tuition) and research scholarships for PhD and research master's students. Check eligibility and deadlines on each university's site.
