About studying in UK

The UK is one of the most popular choices for Pakistani students. Bachelor's degrees in England usually take three years and most taught master's degrees take one year, so the total time and cost can be lower than in many other countries. Degrees are recognised worldwide, and many universities have large Pakistani student communities.

If you plan to study in the UK from Pakistan, you should know that the rules have become stricter since 2024. Most master's students can no longer bring family members, visa checks on Pakistani applicants are more detailed, and some universities have limited intake from Pakistan. The Graduate Route is also being shortened from January 2027. This guide explains the current costs, entry requirements, Student visa process and work rights, with links to official sources.

Cost of studying in UK

International tuition fees in the UK depend on the university and the subject. As an approximate guide, undergraduate courses cost about £15,000-£28,000 per year, and taught master's degrees about £15,000-£32,000 per year. Medicine, MBA programmes and highly ranked universities can cost much more. Living costs depend on the city: London is the most expensive, while cities in the North of England, Scotland and Wales are usually cheaper.

For the Student visa, you must show your remaining first-year tuition fee (as stated on your CAS) plus living costs. The official living-cost amount is £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 per month outside London, for up to 9 months (so up to £13,761 in London or £10,539 elsewhere). The money must be held for 28 consecutive days, and the end of that 28-day period must be within 31 days of your visa application. You also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge of £776 per year of your visa upfront. Funds can be in your own or your parents' name (with a consent letter and proof of relationship, such as a birth certificate or FRC). Check gov.uk for the current figures before applying.

Entry requirements for Pakistani students

  • Undergraduate: A-levels are usually accepted directly; with FSc/HSSC (Intermediate), some universities accept high marks while others ask for a foundation year first.
  • Postgraduate: most universities want 16 years of education (a 4-year bachelor's, or a 2-year bachelor's plus a master's); some accept 14 years for certain courses or through a pre-master's programme.
  • English: degree-level courses need CEFR B2; universities commonly ask for IELTS Academic 6.0-6.5 for undergraduate and 6.5-7.0 for postgraduate (other tests may be accepted).
  • An unconditional offer and a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from a licensed student sponsor.
  • Academic documents: Matric/SSC and FSc/HSSC or O/A-level results, degree transcripts, and attested copies where the university asks (e.g. HEC-attested degrees).
  • A tuberculosis (TB) test certificate from a UK-approved clinic in Pakistan, plus an ATAS certificate if your subject requires it.
  • Valid passport, bank statements meeting the 28-day rule, and a clear study plan to explain your course choice in a credibility interview.

UK student visa from Pakistan

You need a UK Student visa. You apply online on gov.uk using the CAS number from your university, pay the £558 visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge (£776 per year), and then book an appointment at a UK visa application centre in Pakistan (run by VFS Global, with centres in cities such as Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi) to give your fingerprints and photo. You can apply up to 6 months before your course starts.

Key documents include your passport, CAS, academic documents listed on the CAS, bank statements showing the required funds held for 28 days, a TB test certificate from an approved clinic in Pakistan, and an ATAS certificate if needed. Many Pakistani applicants are asked to take a credibility interview, where you must explain your course, university choice, finances and future plans clearly and consistently. A decision usually comes within 3 weeks from outside the UK, and faster (paid) services may be available. Since January 2024, only PhD or research-degree students and government-sponsored students can usually bring dependants.

Work while studying and after graduation

On a Student visa at degree level, you can usually work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official university vacations (check your university's term dates). You cannot be self-employed or work as a professional sportsperson. After graduating, you can apply for the Graduate Route, which currently gives 2 years of work rights for bachelor's and master's graduates and 3 years for PhD graduates. For applications made on or after 1 January 2027, the Graduate Route for bachelor's and master's graduates will be 18 months (PhD stays at 3 years). The Graduate visa fee is £937 plus the health surcharge. To stay longer, most graduates need to switch to a Skilled Worker visa with a licensed employer.

Intakes and when to apply

The main intake is September, with a smaller intake in January and a few courses starting in May. For September undergraduate entry, apply through UCAS by the January equal-consideration deadline (October for Oxford, Cambridge and medicine). For postgraduate courses, start applying 8-12 months before the start date, and leave at least 2-3 months for the CAS, TB test, 28-day funds period and visa decision.

Study in UK from Pakistan: FAQs

How much does it cost to study in the UK from Pakistan?

Approximately £15,000-£32,000 per year in tuition, depending on the course and university, plus living costs. For the visa, you must show £1,529 per month in London or £1,171 per month elsewhere for up to 9 months, plus the £558 visa fee and £776 per year Immigration Health Surcharge.

Is IELTS required for a UK Student visa?

You must show English at CEFR B2 for degree-level study. Universities can assess this themselves, so some accept other tests or, in some cases, previous study in English. Most still ask for IELTS Academic or a similar test, usually 6.0-7.0 overall.

Can I bring my spouse to the UK on a Student visa?

Usually not on a taught master's or bachelor's course. Since January 2024, dependants are generally only allowed for PhD or research-based degree students on courses of at least 9 months, and for government-sponsored students on courses longer than 6 months.

Is a study gap a problem for a UK Student visa?

There is no fixed gap limit in the visa rules, but universities and visa officers may ask about it. Be ready to explain a gap with evidence such as work experience letters, and show how your course links to your background and plans.

Can I get PR in the UK after studying?

Study and Graduate Route time do not lead straight to settlement. Most graduates move to a Skilled Worker visa, and settlement rules are being tightened under the government's earned settlement plans, so check gov.uk for the current qualifying period.

What scholarships can Pakistani students apply for in the UK?

Options include Chevening Scholarships, Commonwealth Scholarships, and university-specific international scholarships or fee discounts. Eligibility and deadlines change every year, so check each scheme's official website.
