About studying in Finland
Finland offers high-quality, practical education in English, with small classes and a strong focus on research and working life. Its universities and universities of applied sciences run hundreds of English-taught Bachelor's and Master's programmes. If you want to study in Finland from Pakistan, you should plan for tuition fees, a clear funds requirement and a residence permit process that is handled outside Pakistan.
Finland suits students who want a safe, well-organised country, good work-life balance and a two-year job-search option after graduation. Applications for many programmes go through one national portal, Studyinfo, in January. Pakistani applicants should note that identity verification for the residence permit currently has to be done abroad, which can affect timelines, so applying early and checking the latest Migri guidance is important.

Cost of studying in Finland
Non-EU students usually pay tuition for English-taught Bachelor's and Master's programmes, typically approx. EUR 9,000-20,000 per year depending on the institution and field. Programmes taught in Finnish or Swedish and doctoral programmes are tuition-free. Non-EU applicants also pay an application fee (around EUR 100) when applying through Studyinfo. Universities often offer scholarships or partial fee waivers.
For the residence permit, Migri requires at least EUR 800 per month for living costs, so you need EUR 9,600 in your bank account when you apply if your studies last one year or longer. If you have not yet paid your first year's tuition, your account must cover both the tuition and the EUR 9,600. A living-cost grant reduces the amount you must show, but a tuition scholarship does not. In practice, students should budget about EUR 900-1,200 per month, plus student union and student healthcare fees.
Entry requirements for Pakistani students
- Bachelor's: completed FSc/HSSC (or A-levels) that makes you eligible for university in Pakistan; universities and UAS set their own extra requirements and some use entrance exams.
- Master's: a relevant Bachelor's degree; Pakistani applicants should normally have a 4-year Bachelor's (16 years of education). Check each programme's eligibility rules.
- English: most programmes accept IELTS Academic (often 6.0-6.5 overall) or TOEFL iBT; check exact minimums and section scores.
- Attestation: HSSC/SSC documents attested by IBCC and degrees and transcripts attested by HEC are normally needed; follow the document instructions of each university.
- Applications for many programmes go through Studyinfo.fi; some universities run separate application rounds with their own deadlines.
- Documents: passport, certificates and transcripts, English test result, and sometimes a motivation letter, CV or entrance test.
Finland student visa from Pakistan
Pakistani students need a residence permit for studies, which for degree students is granted for the whole study period. You apply online through Enter Finland after you receive your admission letter, pay the processing fee (EUR 600 online or EUR 750 on paper from 1 January 2026), and then prove your identity in person at a Finnish mission or designated service point. Finland does not offer this service inside Pakistan; in 2026 the designated location for Pakistani nationals is Doha, Qatar, and access has been affected by Qatar entry restrictions. Check Migri and finlandabroad.fi for the latest arrangement before you book anything.
Key documents include your passport, admission letter, proof of tuition payment or a scholarship, and proof of funds of at least EUR 800 per month (EUR 9,600 for a year or more). You also need private health insurance that covers medical and medicine costs. Student applications are processed with priority, but you must prove your identity within three months of applying, so apply as soon as you accept your study place.
Work while studying and after graduation
With a student residence permit you can work an average of 30 hours per week, counted over the calendar year, so you can work full-time in holidays as long as the yearly average stays within the limit; credit-bearing internships agreed with your institution do not count. After completing your degree you can apply for a residence permit to look for work or start a business for up to two years, and you can apply up to five years after graduating. From 8 January 2026, permanent residence normally needs six years of residence, but graduates with a Finnish Master's degree (or a university Bachelor's) are exempt from the waiting period if they meet the other conditions, such as language skills and work history.
Intakes and when to apply
The main intake is autumn (August/September). Most English-taught programmes use the January joint application on Studyinfo (in 2026 it ran from 7 to 21 January), with results from February to May. Some programmes have their own rounds, and a small number of programmes, mainly at universities of applied sciences, offer a January start. From Pakistan, start preparing in September-October of the year before: book IELTS, get IBCC/HEC attestation and arrange funds, so you can apply in January and file your residence permit as soon as you accept a place.

Study in Finland from Pakistan: FAQs
Is it free to study in Finland from Pakistan?
No, not for most English-taught programmes. Non-EU students usually pay tuition of approx. EUR 9,000-20,000 per year. Finnish- or Swedish-taught degrees and doctoral programmes are tuition-free.
Can I study in Finland without IELTS?
Some institutions accept other proof, such as previous English-medium studies in certain cases, but this depends on the university. Most Pakistani applicants submit IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT.
How much money do I need to show for the residence permit?
Migri requires EUR 800 per month, which is EUR 9,600 if your studies last a year or more. If your tuition is not paid yet, you must also show the first year's tuition.
Can I bring my spouse and children?
Yes, family members of degree students can apply for a residence permit based on family ties. You must show extra funds for them, and the family rules were tightened in 2025, so check Migri's current guidance first.
Can I get permanent residence after studying in Finland?
Yes, it is possible. Under rules from 8 January 2026, holders of a Finnish Master's degree do not need the usual residence period, but must meet other conditions such as Finnish or Swedish language skills and work history.
Are there scholarships for Pakistani students?
Finland has no government scholarships for international degree students. Universities offer their own scholarships and tuition fee waivers, usually applied for with your study application.
