About studying in Cyprus

North Cyprus (the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, TRNC) has many English-taught universities with relatively low fees and large tuition discounts, which has made it popular with Pakistani students. Admission is usually straightforward: universities accept HSSC/FSc or A-level results for bachelor's programmes and a bachelor's degree for master's.

Before you decide to study in North Cyprus from Pakistan, understand one important point: the TRNC is recognised as a state only by Turkey. Its degrees are accepted in Turkey when the university is recognised by YÖK, but recognition elsewhere, including HEC equivalence in Pakistan, is not guaranteed. This guide covers costs, the entry process through Turkey, the student residence permit and the recognition questions you should ask before paying any fees.

Why Pakistani students choose Cyprus

  • Most programmes are taught in English, so you do not need to learn Turkish to study.
  • Universities commonly offer large tuition discounts to international students, making fees relatively low.
  • Admission requirements are generally less competitive than in Turkey's top state universities.
  • Degrees from YÖK-recognised TRNC universities are accepted in Turkey, which helps if you plan further study there.
  • There are two main intakes, in autumn and spring, giving flexible start dates.
  • The island is small and campuses usually include dormitories, which keeps daily costs manageable.

Cost of studying in Cyprus

Tuition is usually quoted as a full list price with a scholarship or discount applied. For example, Eastern Mediterranean University's 2025–26 fees for new international students, after a 70–80% discount, were approx. USD 3,765–5,290 a year for most faculties, approx. USD 3,975–5,605 for engineering, approx. USD 4,920–7,020 for pharmacy and approx. USD 13,845–16,470 for medicine, plus a one-time registration fee. Fees and discount levels differ between universities, so compare the final amount you will actually pay each year, not the headline discount.

Many universities offer package prices that include a shared dormitory room. On top of that, budget for food, transport, books, health insurance and the residence permit fees paid through the immigration system (a health check fee and an immigration fee). Keep recent bank statements and fee receipts ready, as they may be checked when you enter.

Entry requirements for Pakistani students

  • Bachelor's: HSSC/FSc (12 years) or A-levels; minimum marks vary by university and programme.
  • Master's: a recognised bachelor's degree, normally 16 years of education for most programmes.
  • English: an IELTS or TOEFL score, or the university's own English proficiency exam; students who do not meet the level join an English preparatory year.
  • An unconditional acceptance letter is needed for entry, which is usually issued after you pay the tuition deposit.
  • Documents: passport, IBCC-attested Matric/HSSC certificates, HEC-attested degrees and transcripts, photos and a health report.
  • Medicine applicants who plan to practise in Pakistan must check PMDC rules for foreign medical degrees before applying.

Cyprus student visa from Pakistan

Pakistani citizens need a visa to enter the TRNC. You arrange this through the TRNC Representative Office in Islamabad using your acceptance letter, and your university's international office can guide you. All flights to North Cyprus connect through Turkey, so you must also check Turkish transit rules: the Turkish Embassy in Islamabad lists a specific "Education in the TRNC" visa category, and Eastern Mediterranean University notes that students from certain countries need a Turkish transit visa even when staying in the airport transit area. Confirm both requirements with the TRNC Representative Office, the Turkish Embassy and your university before booking flights. Carry your unconditional acceptance letter, proof of tuition payment and recent bank statements when you travel.

After arrival and university registration, you apply for a student residence permit through the TRNC Ministry of Interior's online immigration system. The process includes a health check (laboratory tests, or certification of an existing health report at the district hospital), payment of the immigration fee, and health insurance. Once approved, you usually collect the permit from the university registrar's office.

Work while studying and after graduation

The student residence permit allows you to live and study in North Cyprus; it does not give general work rights. Some universities offer on-campus student assistant roles (for example in libraries, labs or dormitories) with a small stipend or fee support, but off-campus jobs are scarce and wages are low, so do not plan to pay fees through work. There is no dedicated post-study work visa; staying to work after graduation requires an employer-sponsored work permit under TRNC rules.

Intakes and when to apply

Universities admit students for the Fall semester (September) and the Spring semester (February), and some offer a summer start for preparatory English. Applications are usually open for several months before each intake. From Pakistan, apply at least 3–4 months before the semester starts to leave time for the deposit, acceptance letter, TRNC visa and Turkish transit visa.

Study in Cyprus from Pakistan: FAQs

Are North Cyprus degrees recognised by HEC Pakistan?

This is uncertain. The TRNC is recognised as a state only by Turkey, and HEC assesses every foreign degree individually, looking at whether the university is properly accredited and listed internationally. Before you study in North Cyprus from Pakistan, contact HEC and ask in writing whether a degree from your chosen university and programme will be eligible for equivalence.

Are TRNC universities recognised in Turkey?

Many are, but not all. YÖK, Turkey's Council of Higher Education, has publicly warned that at least one TRNC university is not recognised. Check that your chosen university is YÖK-recognised before applying.

How much does it cost to study in North Cyprus?

After the usual international discounts, most bachelor's programmes cost approx. USD 3,500–6,000 a year, and medicine approx. USD 10,000–16,500. Add accommodation, food, insurance and residence permit fees.

Do I need IELTS for North Cyprus?

Not always. Universities accept IELTS or TOEFL, but most also run their own English test, and students below the required level join an English preparatory year, which adds a year of fees.

Can I work in North Cyprus while studying?

Only in a very limited way. The student residence permit is for study, and paid work is mostly limited to small on-campus assistant roles. Off-campus jobs are hard to find and pay little.

Can I bring my family to North Cyprus?

Family members need their own permission to stay, and the rules are set by the TRNC Ministry of Interior. Ask your university's international office about dependant permits before you apply.
