About studying in Sweden

Sweden is known for innovative teaching, strong research universities and a student-centred style that values group work and independent thinking. Most Bachelor's and Master's applications go through one national portal, universityadmissions.se, where you can apply to several programmes with a single fee. If you plan to study in Sweden from Pakistan, you need to budget for tuition fees and for a monthly living-cost requirement set by the Swedish Migration Agency.

Sweden suits students interested in engineering, sustainability, design, life sciences and business. Pakistani applicants need IBCC-attested HSSC documents for Bachelor's and HEC-attested degrees for Master's. Since April 2025 the Embassy of Sweden in Islamabad again handles passport checks and interviews for residence permits. New 2026 rules limit work during studies and set stricter study progress requirements, so read them carefully before you apply.

Meezab Future Consulting helps Pakistani students who want to study in Sweden: choosing the right course, applying to universities and preparing the student visa file.

Cost of studying in Sweden

Non-EU students pay tuition in Sweden. Fees vary by university and subject, roughly approx. SEK 80,000-135,000 per year for social sciences and humanities, approx. SEK 140,000-185,000 for technical and natural sciences, and up to approx. SEK 320,000 for architecture and design. You must pay the first tuition instalment before you can be considered finally admitted and before you apply for your residence permit. The application fee on universityadmissions.se is SEK 900, no matter how many programmes you choose.

For the residence permit, the Swedish Migration Agency requires you to show at least SEK 10,656 per month (2026 figure) for the entire permit period, which is usually one or two years. If you bring family, you must show an extra SEK 4,440 per month for a spouse and SEK 2,664 per month per child. Funds are normally shown through your own bank account or a scholarship, so keep your bank statements clear and consistent.

Entry requirements for Pakistani students

  • Bachelor's: an Intermediate/Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) meets the general entry requirement; if you graduated after 2009 you need a pass in Mathematics (or submit your SSC). Many programmes also have specific subject requirements.
  • Master's: normally a 4-year Bachelor's degree (minimum 124 credits), or a Bachelor's followed by a Master's (4 years in total).
  • English: Pakistani school English does not meet the requirement; you need an approved test. English 6 (the usual level) equals IELTS Academic 6.5 with no section below 5.5, or TOEFL iBT 90 with writing 20.
  • Attestation: HSSC/ISSC certificates and mark sheets must be attested by IBCC; university degrees and transcripts must be attested by HEC, with the stamp digits clearly visible.
  • Names and dates of birth must match on all documents; affidavits are not accepted to explain differences.
  • Apply and upload documents on universityadmissions.se; some programmes also ask for a CV, motivation letter or portfolio.

Sweden student visa from Pakistan

Pakistani students need a residence permit for higher education studies, which you must receive before travelling. You apply through the Swedish Migration Agency's e-service after you are admitted and have paid your tuition fee, and pay a fee of SEK 1,500 (SEK 750 for children). Most applicants complete a digital passport check in an app; if that is not possible, you book an appointment at the embassy you chose in your application. Since April 2025 the Embassy of Sweden in Islamabad again handles passport checks, fingerprints and interviews for study permits, so applicants no longer need to travel to Addis Ababa.

Key requirements include a valid passport, final admission to full-time studies, proof of paid tuition, and funds of at least SEK 10,656 per month for the whole permit period. If your studies last less than one year you need comprehensive health insurance; for longer studies you are registered in the Swedish population register. Waiting times vary, and in recent cases 75% of decisions were made within three months, so apply as soon as you have paid your tuition.

Work while studying and after graduation

For residence permits granted on or after 11 June 2026, Bachelor's and Master's students may work up to 15 hours per week during the semester, with no limit in June, July and August; work linked to your programme or university, such as traineeships, does not count. After completing at least two semesters and receiving your degree certificate, you may work without limits while your permit is valid. You must also earn 37.5 credits in the first year and 45 credits per year after that to extend your permit. After graduation you can apply for a permit of up to 12 months to look for work or start a business, and you must apply before your study permit expires.

Intakes and when to apply

The main intake is autumn (August/September). For autumn 2027, the University Admissions round opens on 16 October 2026 and closes on 15 January 2027, with documents and the fee due by 1 February and results around early April. A smaller spring intake starts in January, with applications usually closing in August (check exact dates on universityadmissions.se). From Pakistan, begin IBCC/HEC attestation and IELTS early, because verification can take several weeks.

Study in Sweden from Pakistan: FAQs

Is it free to study in Sweden from Pakistan?

No. Pakistani students pay tuition, usually approx. SEK 80,000-320,000 per year depending on the programme, plus a SEK 900 application fee. Doctoral positions are usually paid and tuition-free.

Can I study in Sweden without IELTS?

Usually not. University Admissions states that English studied at upper secondary level in Pakistan does not meet the requirement, so you normally need an approved test such as IELTS Academic or TOEFL iBT.

How much money do I need for the residence permit?

For applications in 2026 you must show at least SEK 10,656 per month for the whole permit period, plus SEK 4,440 per month for a spouse and SEK 2,664 per month per child.

Can I bring my spouse and children?

Yes, your spouse or partner and children under 18 can apply at the same time as you, if you show extra funds for them. New family rules apply from 1 October 2026, including health insurance for family members staying up to one year.

Can I get permanent residence after studying in Sweden?

Study time alone does not lead to permanent residence. After graduation you can look for work for up to 12 months and then move to a work permit; permanent residence may be possible later through work, under rules that are being tightened.

Are there scholarships for Pakistani students?

Universities offer tuition fee scholarships for non-EU students, and the Swedish Institute offers scholarships covering tuition and living costs for selected countries. Check si.se for the current list of eligible countries before applying.
