About studying in USA
The USA has the largest number of universities in the world, from research universities to community colleges. Bachelor's degrees take four years, so the Pakistani 12-year FSc/HSSC or A-levels is usually enough for direct entry. Master's degrees usually take one to two years, and many universities offer funding through scholarships and graduate assistantships.
If you plan to study in the USA from Pakistan, be ready for higher costs and closer visa checks than before. Since 2025, student visa applicants face expanded social media vetting, an in-person interview and new fees. Several further changes have been proposed or are being challenged in court in 2026, so always check official sources before you apply. This guide covers costs, admission requirements, the F-1 visa process, work rules and post-study options.

Cost of studying in USA
Costs in the USA vary greatly by university type and location. As an approximate guide, international students pay about $25,000-$45,000 per year at public universities and $40,000-$60,000 or more at private universities for undergraduate study. Master's tuition is often in a similar range, but many graduate students reduce costs through assistantships, tuition waivers or scholarships. Living costs are roughly $12,000-$25,000 per year, higher in cities like New York, Boston and San Francisco.
There is no single government figure for funds. Instead, your university lists the estimated cost of one year (tuition plus living costs) on your Form I-20, and you must show liquid funds to cover it through bank statements, sponsor letters, scholarships or approved loans. Parents or close relatives can sponsor you, but the visa officer will want to see a clear, believable source of income. You also pay the $350 SEVIS I-901 fee, the $185 visa application fee, and, at posts where it is being collected, a $250 visa integrity fee at the time of visa issuance.
Entry requirements for Pakistani students
- Undergraduate: 12 years of education (Matric/SSC plus FSc/HSSC, or O and A levels); SAT or ACT is optional at many universities but can help with admission and scholarships.
- Postgraduate: most universities expect 16 years of education (a 4-year bachelor's); 14-year degrees are often not accepted, or need an extra year or credential evaluation.
- English: universities commonly ask for IELTS Academic 6.0-7.0 or an equivalent TOEFL or Duolingo score; requirements differ by university.
- GRE or GMAT may be required for some master's and PhD programmes, though many have made them optional.
- Transcripts and degrees, often with a credential evaluation (for example WES) or HEC/IBCC-attested copies if the university asks.
- Statement of purpose, recommendation letters and a CV for graduate programmes.
- Form I-20 from a SEVP-certified school, valid passport and financial documents covering at least the first year of costs.
USA student visa from Pakistan
Pakistani students need an F-1 student visa. After you get Form I-20 from your university, you pay the $350 SEVIS I-901 fee, fill in the online DS-160 form, pay the $185 visa application fee, and book an interview through the official appointment system linked from the US Embassy in Pakistan's website. Student visa interviews take place at the US Embassy in Islamabad and the US Consulate General in Karachi. You should apply in the country where you live, and an in-person interview is generally required.
Bring your passport, DS-160 confirmation, I-20, SEVIS fee receipt, admission letter, academic documents, test scores and strong financial evidence. You must list all social media accounts used in the last five years on the DS-160, and the State Department asks F, M and J applicants to set their social media profiles to public for review. The officer will check that you are a genuine student, can pay for your studies and have clear plans. Some cases go into administrative processing, which can add weeks or months. A $250 visa integrity fee is being collected at some posts when the visa is issued, so follow the embassy's current instructions. Start early, as interview waiting times change often.
Work while studying and after graduation
On an F-1 visa, you can work on campus up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session and full-time during official breaks. Off-campus work is only allowed with specific authorisation, such as Curricular Practical Training (CPT) that is part of your programme. After graduation, Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows up to 12 months of work related to your field, and eligible STEM graduates can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension. In October 2026, DHS proposed large new fees to be paid by universities before recommending students for OPT; this is only a proposal and current OPT rules have not changed, but check for updates. For longer-term work, graduates usually need an employer to sponsor an H-1B visa, which is subject to an annual lottery.
Intakes and when to apply
The main intake is Fall (August/September), with a smaller Spring intake in January and limited Summer starts. For Fall undergraduate entry, early deadlines are usually in November and regular deadlines in January. Graduate deadlines are often between December and February, and funding deadlines can be earlier. Start preparing tests and documents 12-18 months ahead, and book your visa interview as soon as you have your I-20, since the visa can be issued up to 365 days before your programme starts.

Study in USA from Pakistan: FAQs
How much does it cost to study in the USA from Pakistan?
Approximately $25,000-$60,000 or more per year in tuition, plus around $12,000-$25,000 for living costs, depending on the university and city. Add the $350 SEVIS fee, the $185 visa fee and, where collected, a $250 visa integrity fee. Graduate assistantships and scholarships can reduce the cost significantly.
Is IELTS required for US universities?
There is no single US government English test rule; each university sets its own requirement. Many accept IELTS Academic (often 6.0-7.0), TOEFL or Duolingo, and some may waive the test in limited cases. Check each programme's admissions page.
Can I bring my spouse to the USA on a student visa?
Yes. Your spouse and unmarried children under 21 can apply for F-2 visas with their own I-20 from your university. You must show extra funds to support them, and F-2 spouses are not allowed to work.
Is a study gap a problem for a US student visa?
There is no fixed gap limit, but universities and visa officers may ask about it. Explain the gap honestly with evidence such as work experience, internships or courses, and show how your study plan fits your background.
Can I get a green card after studying in the USA?
There is no direct route from student visa to permanent residence. Most graduates use OPT, then an employer-sponsored H-1B visa, and later employer-sponsored permanent residence. This path is long and depends on employer support and annual limits.
What scholarships can Pakistani students get in the USA?
The Fulbright programme in Pakistan funds master's and PhD study in the USA. Many universities also offer merit scholarships for undergraduates and assistantships for graduate students. Check official programme and university websites for current eligibility and deadlines.
