About studying in China

China hosts a large number of Pakistani students, especially in engineering, computer science, medicine and research-based postgraduate degrees. Many universities offer English-taught programmes, and the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) gives Pakistani students a fully funded route through HEC or directly through universities.

To study in China from Pakistan for more than six months, you need an admission letter and a JW202 form (or JW201 for scholarship students) from your university, then an X1 student visa from the Chinese Visa Application Service Center. After arrival you convert this into a residence permit within 30 days. From 2026, most CSC-linked universities also require the new CSCA exam for undergraduate admission. This guide explains costs, requirements, the visa process and work rules.

Meezab Future Consulting helps Pakistani students who want to study in China: choosing the right course, applying to universities and preparing the student visa file.

Cost of studying in China

At public universities, tuition for international students is usually approx. USD 2,500–10,000 a year. For example, Beihang University's 2026 fees were RMB 25,000–30,000 a year for Chinese-taught programmes and RMB 30,000 for English-taught programmes, plus an application fee and medical insurance. Private and foreign-run universities can cost much more, sometimes over USD 30,000 a year. English-taught MBBS fees vary by university, so check the official fee schedule.

Living costs depend heavily on the city: on-campus dormitories are usually the cheapest option, and smaller cities cost far less than Beijing, Shanghai or Shenzhen. A broad estimate is approx. USD 400–1,000 a month. For the X1 visa, you must show funds of at least USD 2,500 per academic year (or the equivalent in rupees), or a scholarship certificate, and the bank statement balance should cover the full study period.

Entry requirements for Pakistani students

  • Bachelor's: HSSC/FSc or A-levels with good grades; from 2026 most universities in the CSC system require the CSCA exam (Mathematics for all, plus Physics or Chemistry for science, engineering and medicine).
  • Master's: a recognised bachelor's degree (normally 16 years of education), study plan and usually two recommendation letters; PhD applicants need a master's degree.
  • English-taught programmes: often IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80–90, or proof that previous education was entirely in English, depending on the university.
  • Chinese-taught programmes: HSK, often Level 4–5 or higher, depending on the programme.
  • Documents: passport, IBCC-attested Matric/HSSC certificates, HEC-attested degrees and transcripts, photos, police character certificate and a health or physical examination form if the university asks.
  • MBBS applicants must meet PMDC rules, including passing MDCAT (or an approved equivalent) with at least 50% and registering with PMDC before admission abroad.

China student visa from Pakistan

For studies longer than 180 days you need an X1 visa; the X2 visa is only for short courses up to 180 days. After admission, your university sends you an admission letter and a JW202 form (self-funded or partly funded students) or a JW201 form (Chinese Government Scholarship students). You complete the online visa application form and submit it at the Chinese Visa Application Service Center in Islamabad (other centres also serve Lahore and Karachi). Key documents include your passport (valid for more than 6 months with a blank page), CNIC copy, the printed application form and photo, the JW201/JW202 and admission letter, proof of funds of at least USD 2,500 per year or a scholarship certificate, and a police character certificate (apostilled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs if it has no QR code).

According to the Islamabad visa centre's fee table, the visa fee for Pakistani citizens is currently PKR 0, but a non-refundable service fee of PKR 13,200 applies for regular service. Check current processing times with the centre. Within 30 days of entering China, you must apply for a study residence permit at the local public security exit-entry office, usually with help from your university's international office.

Work while studying and after graduation

International students can do part-time work or internships only with university approval and an annotation added to their residence permit by the local exit-entry office. Students must be 18 or older, enrolled for more than one year and in good academic standing, and work is normally limited to 8 hours a week and 40 hours a month (16 hours a week and 80 hours a month in vacations), within the city where the university is located. Working without approval can lead to penalties. After graduation, international students who complete a master's degree or higher in China within the past year can apply for a work permit if they have good grades (average 80% or B+/B) and a job related to their major that meets local salary standards.

Intakes and when to apply

The main intake is September, and some universities also admit students in March. University applications for September usually open around November and close between March and June. For the Chinese Government Scholarship through HEC, the portal for the 2026–27 cycle closed on 5 January 2026, so watch for the HEC announcement in late autumn. From Pakistan, start 9–12 months before your intended start date, and book your CSCA test early if you are applying for a bachelor's degree.

Study in China from Pakistan: FAQs

How much does it cost to study in China from Pakistan?

Public university tuition is usually approx. USD 2,500–10,000 a year, and living costs are roughly USD 400–1,000 a month depending on the city. You also need to show at least USD 2,500 per year in funds for the X1 visa.

Is IELTS required for China?

For English-taught programmes, many universities ask for IELTS (often 6.0) or TOEFL, but some accept proof that your previous studies were entirely in English. Chinese-taught programmes need an HSK certificate instead.

Are Chinese degrees recognised by HEC Pakistan?

Degrees from recognised Chinese universities are generally eligible for HEC equivalence, but HEC checks each degree individually, including attendance and mode of study. MBBS graduates must also meet PMDC registration and examination rules to practise in Pakistan.

How do I get a CSC scholarship from Pakistan?

You can apply for Type-A places through HEC, which nominated 75 Pakistani students (35 bachelor's, 25 master's, 15 PhD) for 2026–27, or apply for Type-B places directly through Chinese universities. Bachelor's applicants must also take the CSCA exam.

Can I bring my family to China?

Family members need their own visas and residence permits, and the rules depend on your university and city. Postgraduate students should ask the university's international office about family visas before applying.

Can I work while studying in China?

Only with university approval and a work annotation on your residence permit. Hours are limited to about 8 a week during term and 16 a week in vacations, so part-time work will not cover tuition.
